LISTENING CAPACITY - Technics

Technics of the active listening consist of various elements. The main technics used for active listening are as follow:

· paraphrase

· reflection

· appreciation

A paraphrase is a brief repetition of a part of the interlocutor's speech.

A reflection - it's about telling someone we think is his feelings

An appreciation - expression of appreciation for someone or for what he did

Assume the goals you want to achieve by this lesson. Why do you want to improve the listening capacity? Learn what active listening is, ask questions, reflect feelings, appreciate and summarize

Action Plan

Day 1 – Use paraphrase in your daily conversations

Today think about the various situations you meet every day. Try to use the paraphrase technic in the difficult situation you meet today. To help you to implement it into practice do the following exercise. Try to make a paraphrase of the following sentences:

“I have no idea what to do. I promised my colleague that after work I would go with him to the shop to choose a gift for his fiancée, and here I got a phone call from a girl that invited me to dinner for her parents.”

“I'm so happy. I passed a very important exam in physics, and I was sure that I would spank him as usual.”

At the end of the day write in your handbook how did you implemented this technic and what was the influence on your interlocutor. Moreover you can answer those questions:

- Did the spoken opinions become clearer by paraphrasing?

- Should I paraphrase everything that is being said to us? If so, why? If not, why?

- Have you had any difficulties with paraphrasing a sentence?

Day 2 – Reflection

Today your task will be to do the exercises with technic called reflection. Go to your work and try to find opportunity to implement into the practice this technic. To help you to understand what you should do see the following sentences:

- "I see that this situation has upset you ..."

- "I think you got angry."

- "Looks like you're happy with these plans"

Day 3 – Appreciation

Today your task will be to do the exercises with technic called appreciation. Go to your work and try to find opportunity to implement into the practice this technic. To help you to understand what you should do see the following sentences:

- "Thank you for what you said."

- "I appreciate what you did for me."

- "I am glad that you have come to this seriously."

Try to make a conversations in that way, that will appreciate what your interlocutor said to you. Write your observations in the workbook and try drawing conclusions for the future. What does it taught you in the topic of listening capacity?
